Instructions

Select the number of cards North-South are missing in “Suit 1” and “Suit 2”, then click “Find” to show the percentages of all possible suit breaks. For example, suppose you hold eight spades and seven hearts between your two hands. For Suit 1 select ‘5’ (missing spades) and for Suit 2 select ‘6’ (missing hearts). It makes no difference which suit you call Suit 1 or Suit 2.

West and East spaces — By default, the percentages are calculated a priori (from the beginning) which presumes no knowledge of the East-West hands. You can find the true percentages for any situation by selecting the unknown “Spaces” for West and East. For example, suppose that in another suit West is known to have six cards and East only two. For West select ‘7’ (number of unknown cards) and for East select ‘11’.

Precision — By default, the percentages are rounded to two decimal places. You can increase the displayed precision up to 12 decimal places if desired.

Theoretical note — This calculator works for any missing cards within two groups, regardless of how the groups are defined. For example, suppose you are missing three kings and two queens. Selecting ‘3’ and ‘2’ will give correct percentages for the division of those honors.
