Pull up a chair! Richard’s lesson is about to begin.

Advanced Bridge Lessons

In order to help serious players move into the expert ranks, I have made these 50 advanced lessons freely available for online study and reference. Lessons are arranged in four categories (partnership bidding, competitive bidding, declarer play and defensive play), although some overlap exists. Each lesson is accompanied by topical exercises and practice deals. This material may not be used commercially (as in bridge teaching) or distributed in any form. (For commercial use, see Bridge Teaching Material.)

Lessons may be studied in any order (each lesson more or less stands alone), although the listed order within categories is best. After reading a lesson, you should do at least one (preferably all) of the exercises; best way is to jot down your answers on a piece of paper before comparing to those at the end of the exercise. When you err, it is helpful to reconsider the problem and reread the lesson to try to understand why.

Practice deals are arranged in sets of four (dealer and vulnerability match duplicate boards 1-4) with each direction declarer once. These can be played if you have four people, laid out with a deck of cards to study, or simply browsed on-screen. Recommended bidding and play are shown, with key plays indicated by an exclamation point. Good luck!  –Richard Pavlicek

Bidding Lessons

The basic approach is Standard American, which includes strong notrumps (15-17), five-card majors, weak two-bids and a strong artificial two-club bid. Certain essential conventions (Stayman, Blackwood, negative doubles, etc.) are included, but emphasis is on general principles and tactics — not a lot of conventions. Most instructive points would apply to any system, provided appropriate adjustments (point count, suit lengths, etc.) were made.

Play Lessons

Card-play principles are independent of bidding methods, so this section is appropriate for anyone. The only nonuniformity might be with defensive carding. These lessons assume standard American practice of fourth-best leads, king from ace-king, top of other honor sequences, and right-side-up signals. Those who use different carding would require occasional adjustments.
