Partnership Rankings

Below is a table of partnership rankings from Vugraph coverage of four major events — Vanderbilt, Spingold, U.S. Team Championship and World Team Championship — from 1996 to 2009. Rankings are based on recorded deals from Vugraph presentations, not from all deals played by each pair. Even so, rankings are likely to be representative, as Vugraph matches are typically selected to spotlight the strongest competitors. Listing only includes pairs with at least 400 recorded deals.

Meaning of column headings: Dcr% = Percent of deals as declarer; Mak% = Percent of declared contracts made; Olr% = Percent of deals as opening leader; Set% = Percent of on-lead contracts set. Average IMPs per deal (IMP/d) is shown for deals declared, deals on lead, and the partnership total on which the ranking is based. Total of Dcr% and Olr% for both players is usually less than 100 percent because of passouts, which do not fit in either category but are counted as deals played and in the final IMP average.

Partnership stats are broken down individually according to which player was declarer or opening leader. While providing some interesting comparisons, this may not be significant because of outside factors, especially in close cases or for pairs with a low number of deals. Players in each partnership are listed alphabetically.

Bear in mind that rankings are affected by the teams on which a pair plays. Having strong teammates will boost a pair’s ranking, while weaker teammates will lower the ranking. Consequently, an expert pair that often plays on a client-sponsored team will be underrated here, and the client pair will be overrated.

The impressive dual rank of Giorgio Duboin reminds me of an old story: Italian superstar Pietro Forquet was being interviewed, and the reporter asked him who he thought is the best bridge player in the world. Quite taken aback, Pietro manifested, “It is I, Forquet, who am not only the best but also the second best!“
